SPICE BOX OF THE EARTH 1961
I wonder how many people
in this city
I wonder how many people
in this city
live in furnished rooms.
Late at night when I look out
at buildings
I swear I see a face
in every window
looking back at me,
and when I turn away
I wonder how many go back
to their Desks
and write this down.

THE ENERGY OF SLAVES 1972
o love
did the world come to you
in the form of a women
and you
were you training with mirrors
to make yourself perfect
--------------------------------------------------------------
They locked up a man who wanted to rule the world
The fools
They locked up the wrong man.
--------------------------------------------------------------
To the men and women
who own men and women
those of us meant to be lovers
we will not pardon you
for wasting our bodies and time
--------------------------------------------------------------
The only poem
This is the only poem
I can read
I am the only one
can write it
I didn't kill myself
when things went wrong
I didn't turn
to drugs or teaching
I tried to sleep
but when I couldn't sleep
I learned to write
I learned to write
what might be read
on nights like this
by one like me
--------------------------------------------------------------
GIFT
You tell me that silence
Is nearer to peace then poems
But if for my gift
I brought you silence
(for I know silence)
You would say
This is not silence
This is another poem
And you would hand it back to me.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I did not know
Until you walked away
You had the perfect ass
Forgive me
For not falling in love
With your face or your conversation
